The Colombian government accepted the National Liberation Army’s (ELN) call for renewed peace talks on Thursday. These dialogues, inactive since September, have been stalled for more than four months.
The ELN declared its willingness to convene with the government’s representatives on Wednesday. The goal is to resolve the present impasse in the peace process, with the participation of mediating countries and impartial observers.
A Push for PEACE
Direct talks have been absent since May, with formal negotiations at a standstill since late January. Numerous points of contention led to the ceasefire’s termination on August 3rd.
Discussions ended after a guerrilla attack on a military installation in Arauca. This assault resulted in the deaths of three soldiers and injuries to around thirty others.
The government team stated on Thursday that, following the suspension of talks after this attack, a demonstration of ELN dedication to advancement was crucial. Furthermore, they highlighted the negotiating table as the suitable platform for resolving new difficulties.
