Colombian exports closed the first month of the year with a annual growth of 44.8% and biennial growth of 10.6% (vs. 2020), which shows the health of external sales.
Specifically, the exports totaled US$3,781.6 million in January 2022, a large growth compared to the US$2,610.9 million that were registered in 2021.
With this data, last January becomes the second best record of this month since 2014 when it reached US$4,808.8 million.

“Within the traditional basket, the exchange depreciation, the high international price and the greater mobilization of goods, explained the good behavior”, pointed out a report from the Investigations Directorate of the Bancolombia Group.
According to the balance of Dane and Dian, this result was mainly due to the 71.6% growth in external sales of the fuel groupwhich totaled US$2,092.4 million and contributed 55.3% of total exports.
Despite this, in January 2022, 14.9 million barrels of crude oil were exported, which represented a drop of 5.6% compared to January 2021.

“However, the higher value received was due to the 47.4% growth in the value of the exported price of the good. This, as observed in coal, would be the result of the higher global prices of energy goods, as a result of the rise in the price of gas and the main fuels”, indicates the analysis of the Bancolombia Group.
External coal sales, for example, totaled US$776 milliona growth of 209% compared to the same month of the previous year. The categories of agriculture, food and beverages (US$816.5 million), as well as manufacturing (US$690.7 million) also grew by 23.9%. and 26.2%, respectively.
“Sales of this good registered a second historical maximum for a January of the last 30 years, only surpassed by January 2020, as a consequence of the higher international price”, said the report.

Comparative 2020
In the biennial comparison, it is evident a growth of 10.6% compared to the same month of 2020 (US$3,419.5 million).
Thus, manufacturing grew 25.3%; agricultural, food and beverages, 20.8% and fuels, 0.5%.
Where was it exported to?
In January 2022, the United States was the main destination for Colombian sales with a participation of 22.7% in the total value exported. It is followed by Panama, Brazil, India, Turkey, China and Ecuador.
However, when comparing with 2020, the Dane registers the highest growth in external sales to India (411.4%) and Panama (88.2%). Both contributed 10.7 percentage points to the total variation in exports (10.6%).
