2023-07-20 11:33:29

During the day of this Saturday, July 8, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) It has registered different tremors throughout the Colombian territory, however, there has not been as much telluric activity as on other occasions. Next, we tell you the details.

Very early, late in the morning, several earthquakes occurred in the department of Santander. About 12:37 am an earthquake of magnitude 2.2 and superficial depth (less than 70 km) was registered Guaca – Santander, Colombia.

Minutes later, at 12:44 p.m., a new earthquake of magnitude 2.0 and depth 105 km was registered in Barbosa, Santander. The municipalities close to the epicenter are: Moniquirá (Boyacá) at 8 km, Vélez (Santander) at 10 km. The SGC indicated that it also made sense in Bogotá.

Around 3:39 am, in the Pacific Ocean, a new earthquake of magnitude 3.5 and depth 46 km occurred. The nearby municipalities are: Nuquí (Chocó) at 35 km, Bahía Solano (Mutis) (Chocó) at 63 km, Bajo Baudó (Pizarro) (Chocó) at 84 km.

In addition, this telluric movement made a strong sense in Bogotá and Risaralda.

Tremors July 20, 2023

2:51 AM: In Istmina, Chocó, there was an earthquake of magnitude 2.1, superficial (less than 70 km). The municipalities close to the epicenter are: Río Iró (Santa Rita) (Chocó) at 5 km, Tadó (Chocó) at 10 km, Istmina (Chocó) at 14 km.2:12 AM: Earthquake of magnitude 2.2 and depth 139 km, in Los Santos, Santander. 1:56 AM: In Los Santos, Santander, an earthquake of magnitude 2.4 and depth 153 km was recorded. Nearby municipalities: Jordán (Santander) 10 km, Villanueva (Santander) 14 km.

Are the earthquakes related?

Earthquakes are not related to each other. The earth’s crust is in continuous motion and energy is accumulated by the movement of tectonic plates.

In the only case that earthquakes can be related, it is depending on the geographical location and the seismic activity of the area. For example, when an earthquake is followed by aftershocks. These aftershocks can continue for days, weeks, or even months after the main event.

Activation of nearby faults may also occur. If one quake is big enough, it can trigger other quakes, especially if the faults are interconnected.

But, not all earthquakes are related to each other, and earthquakes can be caused by different geological processes in different geographic locations.

How to act in the face of an earthquake if it is in a building?

During the earthquake you should do the following:

If you are in an earthquake-resistant building, get close to the columns, or get under a desk. At the same time, you can search for areas marked as safe. Stay away from glass or items that may fall. Do not use elevators to get out. Do not go under door frames, as they are not a safe place. Try to open the door. main door and the rooms or areas of the point where it is. This is an important measure.
