The Colombian Minister of Health, Carolina Corcho, announced that the mandatory use of the mask will be requested in open and closed spaces with crowds.

The health portfolio is preparing a resolution with more indications, as indicated.

The measure is due to the country’s public health situation, in which, according to the minister, “we have a confluence of various viral infections related to adenovirus, influenza and covid that are congesting emergency and hospitalization services and, in general , the health system”, explained Corcho.

For this reason, he confirmed that: “We are going to propose the mandatory use of masks in people over 2 years of age in open or closed spaces where there is a crowd. In health institutions, nursing homes, public transportation,” reported local media.

December is classified as a high-risk month in which new infections could occur due to the crowds that are generated in the Christmas and New Year season, with people who attend to see massive lighting or parties.

Corcho noted that “the Ministry of Health and Social Protection has not changed the recommendations and measures that were previously in place regarding the use of face masks.”

Thus, it will continue to be necessary in spaces such as air transport, where this biosecurity measure has never been withdrawn.

Another point that is in the crosshairs of the portfolio is the situation of those people who have not received their full vaccination schedule against covid-19, or who did not appear before their EPS to receive booster doses.

Hence, the minister pointed out that “surgical masks should be used for people who have not been vaccinated and for people who have respiratory symptoms, comorbidities.”

The portfolio asked health service providers to contact users who have not been vaccinated against the pandemic in order to improve the protection of the population from this rebound.
