The friendly between the Colombian National Team and its counterpart from Venezuela passed, with little success, a duel in which more was said regarding the technical problems in the TV transmission than regarding the game itself.

From the 1-0 victory, thanks to an own goal, not much might be extracted. It is true that, considering that they were players who were seen together on a field for the first time – some even wore the tricolor for the first time -, much pyrotechnics might not be expected, but also that individually they might have left better feelings.

At the risk of sounding unfair, few made Néstor Lorenzo think although, fortunately, they were just young people who might represent the desired ‘generational change’. These are the highlights of the friendly in the United States:

Andres Gomez

The 21-year-old winger (21!) appeared just as he was remembered when he was a figure in the local media in 2022: sharp, ambitious, brave, fast. The Real Salt Lake City version of him in the MLS looks more mature but without negotiating the vertigo in the exit right through the right sector, where options are undoubtedly required when Jhon Arias is delayed on the field and Sinisterra is not assured continuity. Young, talented and impetuous, he seems to fill every box on the form.

Samuel Velasquez

A left back position is always an appearance that must be analyzed in Colombia: it is our Achilles heel. At 20 years old, the Atlético Nacional promise took advantage of the opponent’s low demands to always project himself firmly in attack, offering himself for the pass and participating with personality in the offensive task. Did we already say that he is 20 years old and that he also knows the position of central defender? Well, it sounds like the multifunctional one to have on your radar.

Ian Poveda

They did not look at him in the youth teams, he did not count on Rueda in the previous administration, he did not seem to convince anyone despite being a promise in the Premier League and wanting to play, who knows why, in the country of his parents (born in England). But he finally did it and it didn’t clash: in the forward line he stole the spotlight from Martínez by dint of location and imagination to find spaces facing the rival area. Her hug with his family at the end of the game shows his desire to debut. And he did it well. Oh, he’s only 23 years old.
