Colombia is seeking a new conversation between Gustavo Petro and Nicolás Maduro on October 1, when the ceremony will take place. inauguration of the Presidency of Mexico where a meeting of Latin American leaders is planned.
Colombian Vice Foreign Minister Jorge Rojas said on September 20 that this meeting would be an opportunity to address the issue of a political solution for Venezuela.
The Colombian official, who is visiting Madrid to strengthen bilateral ties with Spain, highlighted Bogotá’s active role in achieving a negotiated solution in Venezuela, although he admitted that they have handled it with “caution and a lot of responsibility.”
“For Colombia, it is very important to keep in mind that political peace in Venezuela is related to internal peace in Colombia,” Rojas said.
The Colombian vice-chancellor said that dialogue remains open at all levels with the Venezuelan authorities to seek a meeting between the two presidents.
“I believe that the inauguration of the new president of Mexico will be a good opportunity to reaffirm paths to a political solution for Venezuela,” Rojas said.
Transparency of election results
The Colombian representative said that his government recognizes Maduro’s government until January 2025, when the inauguration is scheduled for the period 2025-2031.
“Full transparency is essential. We want the results to be reliable so we can recognize who won the elections in Venezuela,” Rojas stressed.
The Vice-Chancellor also mentioned that it is important for the country to return to the Inter-American Human Rights system.
He added that Colombia is in favor of exploring all avenues of negotiation, including dialogue with the Maduro government, the opposition, countries in the region, the United States and the European Union.
Importance of Venezuela in the peace process in Colombia
The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that Venezuela’s support in the peace process in Colombia has been important for developing the negotiation tables.
“Regardless of all the difficulties, criticisms, and discussions with Caracas, we appreciate Venezuela’s firm support for the Colombian peace process,” Rojas said.
The Colombian official is confident that the National Liberation Army (ELN) will return to the negotiating table in the coming days and summed up the Petro government’s strategy with the word “persistence.”
“We are going to knock on every possible door, including the Vatican if necessary, so that we can conclude the peace process because Colombia can no longer tolerate any more conflicts,” added the vice-chancellor.
