The Colombian government assured that its abstention from the resolution of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Venezuela was due to the fact that it wants to maintain dialogue with Nicolás Maduro and said that, in any case, any pronouncement is “a salute to the flag“because that country is not part of the multilateral organization.
Through a statement, the Colombian Foreign Ministry indicated that the OAS is not “the corresponding scenario to address issues related to the political situation in Venezuela» and that previous decisions of that body on the country «have departed from neutrality«.
The text presented at the extraordinary session of the OAS and which did not obtain the necessary support, urged the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela to “immediately publish the voting results» on Sunday, in which, according to that organization, Maduro obtained a third term, a result that has been rejected by the opposition and by part of the international community.
He also asked that “A comprehensive verification of the results is carried out in the presence of independent observation organisations to ensure the transparency, credibility and legitimacy of the results.«.
Venezuela submitted its request to leave the OAS in April 2017 after the multilateral organization called a meeting of foreign ministers to discuss the crisis in that country, a measure that became effective two years later, in April 2019.
Meanwhile, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has repeatedly proposed rewriting the OAS’s founding charter and reintegrating Venezuela as a member.
Agreement to respect the results
The Colombian Government today insisted on its call to “All political and social sectors of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to reach an agreement on guarantees and respect for the results of the electoral day of July 28«.
This statement comes after Maduro said he had explained “many things” to Colombian President Gustavo Petro about Sunday’s elections.
Hours earlier, Petro asked the Maduro government for a “transparent” vote count and to accept the result, “whatever it may be,” after two days of protests against the official result, since the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) claims that its candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, won the election by a wide margin.
«The serious doubts surrounding the Venezuelan electoral process could lead its people to a deep violent polarization with serious consequences of permanent division of a nation that has known how to unite many times in its history.“, Petro said.
In this regard, Petro’s government is in talks with Brazil and Mexico “to create the necessary conditions and seek an agreement for coexistence and political peace,” according to statements reported by the EFE agency.
It also states that Colombia’s actions “will continue to adhere to the diplomatic principles of confidentiality, respect and non-interference«.
