Rescue teams on Saturday continued their efforts to find survivors following a mudslide caused by heavy rains in northwestern Colombia killed at least 34 people and injured dozens on a busy highway.
The authorities said in a statement that the mudslide, which occurred on Friday followingnoon, covered a road linking the cities of Quibdo and Medellin in the Chocó province overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
The statement added that rescue teams accompanied by trained dogs from all over the country were sent to the accident site to search for survivors, noting that several cars on the road were completely submerged in mud.
“We lived through a very sad weekend, as the people of the province feel the pain of the victims,” Nubia Cordoba Kori, governor of Chocó Province, said in the statement.
Pictures and videos posted on social media showed the moment a large part of a mountain separated and fell on top of several cars that were moving on the road below.
