The Colombian city of Cartagena de Indias will host the first summit on artificial intelligence (IA) of Latin American and Caribbean countries, which will take place on August 8 and 9.

With the presence of 22 ministers, legislators and AI experts from 18 countries, the objective of the Latin American and Caribbean Ministerial Summit on AI will be to sign a declaration that outlines the position that Latin America will have regarding AI.
In this regard, the Minister of Information and Communications Technologies (MinTIC) of Colombia, Mauricio Lizcano, He pointed out that “is essential” that the countries of the region “position themselves as leaders in the implementation of AI”.
“It will be an opportunity for our countries to work together, share knowledge and strengthen strategies around this transformative technology.

The minister also highlighted that the summit will have three “fundamental pillars“, among which are the creation of”enabling ecosystems that help strengthen the environment and promote the development of artificial intelligence.”
It is also planned to promote the “digital education” through the “training and adoption of AI at all educational levels“, while the last pillar is that of the”“governance”which seeks to establish regulatory frameworks that ensure “responsible and ethical use” of AI.
This meeting is supported by the CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, the Inter-American Development Bank (BID)the European Union, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).
On August 6, also in Cartagena, the National Summit on Artificial Intelligence will be held. More than 300 people are expected to participate in both events.
