According to the Colombian Geological Service, the epicenter was in the municipality of Bello -located next to the city of Medellín-, with a magnitude of 4.0 and a superficial depth of less than thirty kilometers.

“The earth creaked and the ground moved quite a bit,” is how citizens define the shocking tremor they witnessed in the early morning. The alarms sounded, messages arrived on phones warning of the earthquake and the region was put on alert.

There is one episode in particular that attracts a lot of attention on the internet. The movement surprised live journalists from the program ‘The inhabitants of the night’ on the Múnera Eastman Radio station in Medellín.

The communicators were heard saying in full transmission: “It shook hard, but strong. He keeps shaking. He shook hard. It was a brave shake,” said the people who were in front of the microphones this Wednesday.

Here is a summary of the comments: “Epicenter in Bello! No wonder it felt so hard throughout the Aburrá Valley! What a brave awakening!” “Yes, a very strong shake. “I live in Envigado.” “It felt horrible here in Robledo.”

Questions were also raised regarding a sound that accompanied the movement: “Did anyone else feel a noise during the earthquake?”, “why was an explosion heard before the tremor?”, “the sound that accompanied it was impressive.”

Once the incident was reported, the relief agencies activated all their capabilities to deal with any type of incident. The magnifying glass was placed on the municipalities of the Aburrá Valley and the nearby subregions.

This was reported by the Administrative Department of Risk Management of Antioquia: “At this time we communicated with the risk management coordinators. Although it was felt strongly in most municipalities, for now there are no reports of impact.”

The entity detailed that, around 3:31 in the morning, a call for preventive evacuation was answered by the inhabitants of a building located on Carrera 82. After the inspection by specialists, people returned to their homes.

In other parts of the Aburrá Valley, evacuations were reported in some properties. At the moment, relief agencies do not report any major damage due to the earthquake in the early hours of February 28.
