Colombia approves ban on coal exports to Israel in Gaza war sanctions

The Government Colombian approved the decree banning the export of coal to Israel, as yet another measure by the Latin American country to oppose the war in the Gaza Strip.

“They use Colombian coal to make bombs to kill Palestinian children,” said the Colombian president on Sunday. Gustavo Petro, in his X account by echoing the decree published by the media.

In this way, “exports to the State of Israel of thermal coal (coal) are prohibited,” according to the decree, which was signed by several ministers, including the foreign minister, Luis Gilberto Murillo, on August 14 and will come into force next week, despite the fact that the ban was already announced by Petro in June.

Fuels and extractive industry products, including coal, are Colombia’s main exports, and between January and June they have brought in 11.689 billion dollars for the country, with the United States being the main destination.

Coal is Colombia’s main export product to Israel, but it only accounted for 5.05% of the total coal exported by Colombia in 2023, according to the decree.
