Colombia and doubts about electoral results in Venezuela
  • In a debate in the Colombian Senate about the Venezuelan elections, Foreign Minister Luis Murillo insisted on the publication of the minutes

Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo reiterated that his country will not recognize Nicolás Maduro’s victory in the Venezuelan elections on July 28 until doubts about the legitimacy of the results are dissipated.

“President Gustavo Petro has been very clear, we are not going to recognize the results until the doubts are dissipated, which has not been done and should have been done in accordance with the Venezuelan legal system,” Murillo said on October 1 during a political control debate in the Senate on the Executive’s position regarding the Venezuelan elections.

The governments of Colombia, Brazil and Mexico They have tried to mediate in Venezuela’s post-election crisis since the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced Maduro’s victory without showing the data disaggregated by table.

“Colombia respects the principle of sovereignty and independence of the states. We are going to continue working and it is something that Venezuelans must resolve, but there are serious doubts of legitimacy and legality that must be dispelled, and that can only be done with what Colombia has been demanding,” added the chancellor.

None of these countries have yet recognized Maduro’s re-election, but neither have they chosen to accept the victory of the opposition standard-bearer, Edmundo González, which is why they insist on the publication of the electoral records.

“In order to dispel any doubt, the process of publishing voting records must be carried out, and it must be demanded that there be impartial international oversight of these results of the electoral process,” Murillo added.

Posture of Gustavo Petro

Petro assured on September 25 that his country and Brazil They will not recognize Maduro’s victory if the electoral records are not presented.

“With President Lula we remain at one point: if there is no presentation of minutes, there is no recognition,” Petro expressed in an interview for CNN.

For Petro, there was an “error prior” to the Venezuelan elections because it forced a society to dispute political power without freedom.

“This issue of freedom applies to all sides that are facing each other there. There was no freedom for the opposition, because the main candidate (María Corina Machado) did not participate and it is a problem today because, who do you talk to in Venezuela on the opposition side? And on the side of the Venezuelan government also because a country under economic sanctions is not free to vote,” said the head of state,” said the Colombian president.

Proposal of the Senate of Colombia on Edmundo González

He Senate of Colombia On September 24, it approved a proposal to recognize González as the legitimate winner of the elections.

“We request that the government recognize the figure of the legitimate winner of the Venezuelan presidential elections, Edmundo González, who represents the true will of the Venezuelan people,” part of the document stated.

With this proposition, the legislative body urges President Petro to recognize González’s victory, however, the president responded that I would “study” the proposal without further details.

“I am glad that today, the Senate of Colombia is in tune with world democracy. We join the congresses that defend democracy and freedom,” said Senator Miguel Uribe.
