At least eight rebels were killed in fighting between two rival factions of dissidents of the former FARC in the south Colombiaa military source told AFP yesterday Sunday.
The clashes that broke out over the weekend in Kaketa prefecture pitted the Carolina Ramirez Front once morest the Border Commandos. Both groups are made up of rebels who have rejected the peace deal signed in 2016 by the former rebel group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
The dead “are at least eight,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Dissident groups from the former FARC have been embroiled in a war in parts of Colombia, which authorities say are vying for control of areas through which drugs are trafficked or to tax traffickers and producers.
The Carolina Ramirez Front is among the groups led by “Ivan Mordisco,” who is considered the most powerful rebel leader in Colombia and on April 16 abandoned peace talks with the government of President Gustavo Petro.
The Border Commandos – a formation active on the border with Ecuador – belong to the Second Marquetalia, a faction founded by the former number two of the FARC, Ivan Marques. The latter, who was said to have died in Venezuela, recently resurfaced on video.
