Cologne survives the nerve-wracking battle in Sandhausen and is in the second round of the DFB Cup. The decision will only be made in extra time.

With its first win under new coach Gerhard Struber, 1. FC Cologne has reached the second round of the DFB Cup with unnecessary difficulty. The Bundesliga relegated team beat third division club SV Sandhausen 3-2 after extra time on Sunday. It was only in the sixth minute of stoppage time that the FC conceded the 2-2 draw after leading 2-0.

Cologne started dominant, determined – and scored. Julian Pauli, 19 years old and promoted from the A-youth team, scored his first professional goal with a header after a corner kick (19th minute). FC forced Sandhausen onto the defensive and added to the score: Linton Maina scored the second goal from a half-right position after a pass from Mathias Olesen. Only a foul whistle from referee Benjamin Brand when Cologne were leading 3-0 prevented a decision before the break.

Sandhausen scores from the penalty spot

A handball penalty brought Sandhausen into the game. The ball bounced off the hand of FC central defender Timo Hübers and Besar Halimi converted safely (59th minute). As Cologne failed to convert their chances, as they did at the start of the league – one defeat and one draw – it remained exciting.

SVS goalkeeper Nikolai Rehnen prevented further goals several times in the away atmosphere in front of 15,000 spectators, and then Richard Meier actually scored the equalizer. Olesen (116th) sealed the well-deserved Cologne victory late on.
