The Secondary 2 Youth Science Fair at Collège Trinité took place on January 18. The prizes were awarded at the end of the day in front of the parents.
“Secondary 2 students have been working hard for several weeks now to prepare for this event. The subjects are varied, but above all fascinating! » tells us the spokesperson for Trinité College, Stéphanie Hamel.
The winners
Édouard Berthiaume and Jaco Yale Pérusse won this local Science Fair final thanks to their Virtual Reality Demystified booth. 2nd place was awarded to Alicia Johnson and Laury-Ann Lalonde for What is the Northern Lights. Finally, Liquid air: its creation and use, by Arthur Brault and Benjamin Faucher, obtained 3rd place.
These are the winners of the Trinity College Science Fair. “This is our local final. Those who win can compete in the regional final. We encourage them to register. Last year, our students made it to the provincial final with a project on volcanoes,” says one of the science teachers, Véronique Diamond.

On the Science Fair website, we learn that a local final is organized by the school while a large number of teams have been formed. This is the starting point, a first opportunity to present the projects to the public. This final makes it possible to select the projects that will go to the regional final and, later, to the provincial component. At Trinity College, some 180 science students took part in the event. “It’s a team effort that they have to do. They set up a kiosk, present their project, popularize the chosen subject. There is a scientific approach behind it all, a deadline to respect and a laboratory report to complete,” adds Ms. Diamond.
A distinction prize was awarded to Adam Ferragut for A sharp look towards the sky: radars.
Special day
On January 18, the young people set up their presentation booth in the gymnasium, then they explained the results of their research to students from other levels, staff members and parents. They were evaluated the same day. “We both have an interest in medicine, organs and the human body in general. This is why we chose to talk regarding the lungs,” Anouk Arpin explains to the newspaper. The duo of girls were awarded the Science Fair’s favorite prize for their idea Give me oxygen, it’s “lung” good!
When we walk through the exhibition, we see how diverse and numerous the themes addressed by the students are. Geysers, health candy vs artificial candy, supernovas, depression, virtual reality, corals, liquid air, various visions, smog, déjà vu, mushrooms are just a few some of these subjects. “There is pride in the work accomplished. Their scientific approach might sow a seed that will open doors for them later… or not at all,” says Stéphanie Hamel.
Popularization
There are three components to the Science Fair: experimentation, design and popularization projects. The College had chosen the extension component, which is part of the exploratory objectives of the first cycle of secondary school. “By allowing their students to learn more regarding a subject that interests them, our Secondary 2 science and technology teachers make them experience science differently,” concludes Ms. Hamel.
