College Hockey Conference Weekend Wrap Up: Road Teams Sweep NCHC Series

The home ice advantage for NCHC teams in conference games this past weekend was … negligible.

There were three NCHC series and the road teams all swept.

Fourth-ranked North Dakota (2-0 NCHC, 7-2-1 overall) got a sweep over No. 18 Minnesota Duluth (0-2, 3-5-3) at Amsoil Arena, St. Cloud State (4-0, 6-4) earned a sweep over No. 12 Western Michigan (1-3, 4-3-1) at Lawson Arena and Colorado College (2-2, 7-3) swept Miami (0-4, 4-5-1) at Steve Cady Arena.

In nonconference series involving NCHC teams, No. 2 Denver (2-0, 7-2-1) split with No. 16/17 Arizona State at Mullett Arena and Nebraska Omaha (1-1, 5-2-1) swept Long Island at Baxter Arena.

Fighting Hawks shut down slumping Bulldogs

North Dakota senior goalie Ludvig Persson continued his strong start and stopped 50 of 52 shots (.962 save percentage), including all 30 shots he faced Saturday, to help lead the Fighting Hawks to 4-2 and 2-0 wins in Duluth. Persson, a transfer from Miami, has two shutouts and is 7-2-1 with a 1.90 goals- once morest average and .925 save percentage this season.

Offensively, the Fighting Hawks got three assists from sophomore center Owen McLaughlin and goals from five players in the series. Senior left wing Riese Gaber, junior center Cameron Berg, senior right wing Louis Jamernik and graduate defenseman Logan Britt each had a goal and an assist in the series. UND was 2-for-9 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The offensive woes continue for Minnesota Duluth, which has scored seven goals in an 0-5-1 stretch. Graduate student Matthew Thiessen had a strong weekend in goal, stopping 70 of 76 (.921 save percentage) for the Bulldogs.

SCSU’s 2 hot players lead sweep at Western Michigan

The Huskies have benefited from two hot players to help them to the top of the NCHC standings in the early going.

Veeti Miettinen, a senior wing and Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick, had the game-winning goals in two wins (3-2, 3-0) for SCSU in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Miettinen has scored goals in six straight games and is tied for 11th in the country in goals with seven. Going back to last season, Miettinen has 12 goals and 25 points in his last 21 games.

St. Cloud State also got strong goaltending for the second straight weekend from Dominic Basse. Basse, a senior and Chicago Blackhawks draft pick, stopped 45 of 47 shots (.957) in the series, including stopping all 23 shots he faced Saturday in a 3-0 win. It was the second straight Saturday shutout for Basse and his third shutout of the season.

Western Michigan got a goal and an assist from graduate student left wing Joe Cassetti and two assists from senior right wing Hugh Larkin in the opener, but the Broncos were 0-for-6 on the power play in the series. WMU senior Cameron Rowe stopped 35 of 41 shots (.854).

Tigers snap 3-game skid with sweep

Center Noah Laba and goalie Kaidan Mbereko both had strong weekends to help Colorado College snap a three-game losing streak with two wins in Oxford, Ohio.

Laba, a sophomore and New York Rangers draft pick, had four goals and two assists and was a plus-6 for the Tigers, who earned 5-1 and 4-1 wins. Gleb Veremyev, a sophomore left wing on Laba’s line, had two goals and two assists in the series. Sophomore goalie Kaidan Mbereko stopped 61 of 63 shots (.968) and helped the Tigers go 8-for-9 on the penalty kill in the series.

Graduate student Logan Neaton stopped 52 of 60 shots (.867) and took both losses in goal for Miami. The RedHawks got goals from sophomore left wing Max Dukovac and senior left wing Matthew Barbolini in the series.

Denver keeps scoring, gets split with ASU

Denver played its first series at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona, and the offense kept rolling.

The Pioneers scored 13 goals in the nonconference series once morest Arizona State, but managed a split. In the opener, ASU senior right wing Dylan Jackson had a hat trick and graduate student left wing Tyler Gratton scored at 2:55 of overtime in a 6-5 win for No. 16/17-ranked Sun Devils (7-2-1). The game marked the first this season that junior center Massimo Rizzo did not have a point.

On Saturday, junior right wing Jack Devine had two goals, junior center Carter King had a goal and three assists and Rizzo picked up an assist for his 100th career point in an 8-4 Denver win. Devine, a Florida Panthers, draft pick, leads NCAA Division I in goals with 10. Freshman right wing Miko Matikka, an Arizona Coyotes draft pick, had three goals and an assist in the series for the Pioneers.

Both teams had success on the power play. Denver was 3-for-8 with the man advantage, while ASU was 4-for-9.

Mavericks get two 1-goal wins

Nebraska Omaha got a goal 52 seconds into overtime by sophomore defenseman Joaquim Lemay, a Washington Capitals draft pick, on Saturday for a 5-4 win to earn a nonconference series sweep of Long Island (4-7).

On Friday, the Mavericks got power-play goals from junior center Ty Mueller, a Vancouver Canucks draft pick, and senior center Jimmy Glynn and held on for a 3-2 win.

Both teams had success in the series with UNO going 4-for-11 with the man advantage and Long Island was 4-for-9.
