In the collective bargaining dispute in Hamburg’s mail order and retail trade, the Verdi union has called for further warning strikes for Thursday. Around 400 employees, including those from the H&M and Zara branches as well as Kaufland and Ikea, gathered in the morning for a rally in the city center, the union announced following exploratory talks on Monday remained fruitless.

Hamburg – “In view of the continued sharp rise in inflation, especially in the case of food prices, the attitude of employers is far from a possible solution,” said Verdi negotiator Heike Lattekamp. “The employees are extremely disappointed and angry at the same time. They expect an offer that can be closed.”

Verdi is demanding an increase in wages and salaries of EUR 2.50 per hour, a minimum hourly wage of EUR 13.50 and an increase in training allowances of EUR 250 per month – for a period of 12 months. So far, the employer offer – with a term of 24 months – provides for a wage and salary increase of 3 percent for 2023 (from the month of the contract), 2 percent from May 2024 and a further 2.5 percent from February 2025. According to Verdi, the negotiations should continue next Thursday (July 13). dpa
