What is Colibri Space?
We are a team and a family that provides personal development and bonding proposals for adolescents and young people. We seek to create spaces that help them learn more regarding themselves and transform their outlook on themselves, discovering themselves valuable and capable.
How was the project born?
It was born in 2020, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. We have wanted to do a project for young people for a long time and the confinement of the quarantine led us to take that leap. We wanted to know how the teenagers were at home, how their families were… to be present in some way. So it was that, in mid-May, we started with a series of family workshops for parents and children.
What is the purpose of the space?
Our mission is to help adolescents transform the way they look at themselves, and also the way adults look at this stage. It is a time in life of great changes that can be experienced with great difficulty. Change your body, your interests, your friendships. Many kids feel like “aliens,” as if they don’t recognize what they see in the mirror. And something similar happens to parents. They don’t recognize that son or daughter who used to come running to hug them and today locks themselves in her room all followingnoon with their cell phone. The objective of each of our spaces is for you to discover that these changes, far from being a threat, bring something new and good: the search for who I am, what I want for my life and who I want to share it with.
What new perspective do you propose on adolescence?
We invite adolescents and their families to see not only what is missing or what it costs, but to discover and deploy all the resources they have. For example, if a young person arrives with self-esteem problems, we accompany him to learn regarding his interests, abilities and dreams. This allows you to go out into the world with greater self-confidence. And for parents, we accompany them in this process of assuming a new way of being in their children’s lives, helping them understand what happens at this stage and discover what they have to transform to adapt to this new role. In this sense, adolescence is an opportunity for growth for the entire family.
How do you help adolescents and their families cultivate this perspective?
For us, the sense of humor, play, artistic expression and contact with the body cannot be missing in the office and in the workshops. All of them are key resources because they give us the ability to connect with the present moment to discover how we are and, at the same time, relate from a place of greater acceptance, curiosity and non-judgment. Our training in art therapy, mindfulness and link coaching allows us to integrate these resources and keep them in mind in all our proposals.
