Over the three weeks following the cold wave, diabetic hospitalizations increased 1.45 times and deaths increased 2.02 times.
According to the research results of Professor Kim Kyung-nam’s team in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Ajou University College of Medicine, hospitalizations and deaths among diabetics increased 1.45 times and 2.02 times over the three weeks following the cold wave occurred. The stronger and longer the cold wave, the higher the hospitalization and death rates. The research team explained, “When diabetic patients are exposed to cold, their ability to regulate body temperature is reduced due to insufficient peripheral blood vessel constriction and reduced heat production through shivering. This is presumed to make them more vulnerable to cold.”
To protect your health from cold waves, you should do light indoor exercise, drink adequate water, and eat a diet filled with well-balanced nutrients. Maintain the indoor environment at an appropriate temperature (18-20 degrees) and appropriate humidity (40-60%), and avoid outdoor activities as much as possible in very cold weather. When going out, wearing layers of underwear or thin clothing and wearing gloves, a scarf, a hat, and a mask will help keep you warm.
In particular, the elderly and children have a weaker ability to maintain body temperature than adults, so when a cold wave comes, they should refrain from outdoor activities and pay more attention to keeping warm. If you have chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, your symptoms may worsen due to sudden temperature changes, so be careful not to be suddenly exposed to cold and avoid excessive activities. Avoid icy roads, sloping or irregular surfaces, and stairs, use level ground or elevators whenever possible, and avoid putting your hands in your pockets when walking.
