Coke Studio fame artists await government aid

Asad Abbas started his artistic journey in 2008 by winning the Pakistan Sangeet Icon competition. For winning this competition, he received a cash prize of one crore rupees and a BMW car.

In 2013, Asad Abbas performed Sufi Kalam ‘Mahi Gul’ based on ‘Raag Malhar’ with Fareeha Parvez in Coke Studio Season Six and the track was among the most appreciated songs of the season.

All the savings that Asad Abbas earned during his artistic journey spanning more than a decade have been spent on his treatment and now he is unable to meet the expenses of his wife and children along with the treatment.

Speaking to Independent Urdu, Asad Abbas said that eight years ago, when it was discovered that both his kidneys had failed, the doctors advised him to undergo a transplant.

‘A brother’s kidney was matched with mine. His kidney was implanted in me, transplanted, I returned home and after some time my condition started to deteriorate again.’

He said that on re-testing, it was found that the kidney transplant that was done to him has also failed. According to Asad Abbas, the doctors advised him that your case has become too complicated, so now you should get the transplant from abroad instead of Pakistan.

‘I am trying to get my transplant done in America. He has mentioned the expenses of about two hundred thousand US dollars, which is about five to six crore rupees. I can’t afford that much money.’

Asad Abbas said that he had spent about two and a half crore rupees for treatment and transplant from Pakistan and so far he has spent about six to seven crore rupees on his treatment.

Ali Abbas is my elder brother, he is very supportive. All the savings we had, with Ali Abbas Bhai and with me, our houses were sold, our cars were sold. We had put everything on the line thinking that if our lives were spared, then perhaps we would stand on our feet again, God willing.’

He said that now his life depends on daily dialysis and if ever he cannot get dialysis, his pain becomes so severe that it becomes difficult for him to breathe.

Rohail Hayat, the music producer of Coke Studio Six and a well-known musician, appealed to Asad Abbas on his Facebook page to help him financially.

In response to the question asked about this, Asad Abbas said that “All the big artists of the Pakistani industry have called me, encouraging me that we will do something for you, but so far I have received only their calls.” There are and only courage has been found, only consolation has been found. No one has helped me financially so far.’

In this way, caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab Mohsin Naqvi has also promised to provide treatment and financial support to Asad Abbas.

He says that this is his request to the government that like Umar Sharif and Alamgir were sent to America for transplant, they should also be sent to America for transplant.

‘I am a self-sufficient person and I am a person who earns on my own, with my own hands, with my own labor. So just let me be enabled to stand on my feet again and earn myself and fulfill the wishes of my children.’
