Consuming more than 2 cups of coffee a day while suffering from hypertension would increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
When it comes to health, coffee is a drink that divides. On the one hand, recent properties of caffeine have been demonstrated through studies. Among other things, it would treat a rare neurological disorder and reduce the risk of endometrial cancer. But on the other hand, it would increase our cholesterol level, cause sleep disorders and alter our mind.
However, these disorders can affect healthy people. The effects of coffee may be more dangerous in patients with heart problems or hypertension. However, the link between this disease and the drink has recently been the subject of a study.
A reduction in the risk of premature death but the opposite effect in the event of hypertension
The study in question was conducted by Professor Hiroyasu Iso and his team. Their full account was published in the Journal of American Heart Association.
For this study, Professor Iso wanted to determine whether coffee had a beneficial influence on everyone, including more sensitive people. With his team, he therefore studied the lifestyles of more than 18,000 volunteers. At the same time, he also wanted to check the impact of green tea on the health of the same panel of volunteers.
However, he discovered a link between coffee consumption and the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
Specifically, he found that the chances of dying in this way were doubled in patients with hypertension. According to him, the latter are more “sensitive to the effects of caffeine, the harmful effects of caffeine may outweigh its protective effects and may increase the risk of death”.
What daily consumption of coffee is recommended for the people concerned?
Most disturbing is thatanother recent study on the drink revealed that it can help increase our longevity. It would also reduce the risk of premature death. However, the consumption recommended by this 2022 study (between 1 and 3 cups of coffee) per day is incompatible with hypertension.
If the study warns of the dangers of coffee in the event of hypertension, this does not mean that the people concerned must stop consuming it. It is possible to stop the drink. But for people who enjoy their caffeine fix, researchers recommend drinking only one a day.
Finally, Professor Iso specifies that patients suffering from hypertension can also continue to consume green tea.
