And what regarding his deaf parents, played by Karin Viard and François Damiens? In France, Apple TV+ subscribers already have access to it. And for the others? No cinema release planned, with one exception. Pathé, which distributes this adaptation, has decided to create the event.
On Saturday April 23 and Sunday April 24, “Coda” will be broadcast in just over 120 French cinemas, including Pathé Gaumont, CGR, Kinepolis or even Grand Ecran cinemas and a few independent cinemas in Paris and in the provinces. Subtitles dedicated to the deaf and hard of hearing
An “exceptional case”, tells us the National Cinema Center (CNC), made possible thanks to a recent decree. Two options presented themselves to Pathé. The first: “A number of sessions not exceeding 30 and with no time limit. The second: “A number of screenings not exceeding 500 and a duration not exceeding two days of the same cinematographic week. »
It is this last possibility that has therefore been retained. “There will be one to four sessions per cinema, specifies the CNC. It is symbolic. But it allows us to honor this Franco-American co-production, which is not intended to be screened followingwards. Le Film français adds that subtitles dedicated to the deaf and hard of hearing will be offered, for the original version as well as for the French version.
At the end of March, “Coda” won three Oscars for three nominations. That of the best actor in a supporting role was awarded to Troy Kotsur, the first deaf actor to receive such an award. On stage, Kotsur, who takes over the role of François Damiens in “La Famille Bélier”, paid tribute to his father, who mastered sign language before being disabled following an accident. Troy Kotsur also recalled that the film had been shown at the White House, and he thanked its director, Sian Heder, for having succeeded in “getting the deaf and hearing people communicate” thanks to this feature film.
An Oscar for the best adapted screenplay and above all, a third for the best film. This award, the most prestigious, was greeted by the whole room, the stars, all smiles, mimicking applause in sign language. With this box of the remake of “La Famille Bélier”, France was somewhat rewarded: on stage, the French producer of the film, Philippe Rousselet, recalled the links of “Coda” with our country, while a young woman was translating her speech into sign language.
