Coco Gauff Wins Western & Southern Open: Historic Success and Porsche Partnership

As the winner of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Coco Gauff celebrated the greatest success of her career. Novak Djokovic won the men’s. For the fifth time, Porsche Cars North America was the sponsor and Official Automotive Partner of the WTA and ATP Masters 1000 tournament in the US state of Ohio.

It can be Coco Gauff’s summer: Just two weeks following winning the tournament in Washington DC, the 19-year-old American won the first Masters title of her career at the Western & Southern Open. In the final she defeated the Czech Karolina Muchova 6:3, 6:4. For the new number 6 in the world rankings, who also played at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in April and had previously won in Auckland (2023), Parma (2021) and Linz (2019), it was the fifth individual success on the WTA Tour. She made tennis history with it: She is the first teenager since Bianca Andreescu in 2019 to win three WTA tournaments in one season, and the first since Caroline Wozniacki in 2007 with five career titles.

“I thank the spectators for the great support and especially my team, who always believed in me despite the ups and downs of the last few weeks,” said the 2022 French Open finalist following the greatest success of her career so far. “I had an incredible week in Cincinnati. It’s nice to see how well this tournament has developed.”

In the men’s game, Novak Djokovic (Serbia) defeated the Spanish world number one Carlos Alcaraz 5:7, 7:6(7) 7:6(4) in a tennis thriller that lasted almost four hours. It was the longest best-of-three final since 1990. In the semifinals, the 23-time Grand Slam winner knocked out Alexander Zverev from Hamburg.

Important preparation for the US Open

As one of the most important preparatory tournaments for the US Open, the Western & Southern Open in Mason, a suburb of Cincinnati, is a particular focus every year. Porsche Cars North America was a partner of the traditional Masters 1000 event for the fifth time. For the almost 200,000 visitors to the extensive grounds of the Lindner Family Tennis Center, the sports car manufacturer was clearly visible as a sponsor and official automobile partner. One of the main squares was marked as “Porsche Court”, and Porsche was also the main sponsor of the Players’ Party and had invited guests to the prestigious event.

The top seeded tournament favorite and “Porsche Friend” Iga Swiatek had to admit defeat to Coco Gauff in a hard-fought three-set match in the semifinals. For the Pole, the Western & Southern Open were nevertheless a successful preparation for the US Open. She obviously felt at home in Ohio.

“It’s nice that my partner Porsche also supports this great tournament. I almost feel at home there,” said the four-time Grand Slam winner. Like the other top stars, the world number one had a Porsche at his disposal for the week of the tournament. The two-time winner of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix drove a Cayenne Turbo GT. “I like this car. It’s very sporty and has tons of power. It’s just a shame that you can’t really use your full potential in the USA,” she said, revealing that her favorite Porsche is the Panamera: “It’s my absolute favourite. It is the ideal car for everyday use because it is not only sporty but also very comfortable. And I love its design.”

First held in 1899, the Western & Southern Open is the oldest professional tennis tournament in the United States still held in its place of origin. As part of the US Open Series, it is an important stop for the players on the way to the US Open in New York, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year starting on August 28th. Iga Swiatek competes there as the defending champion.

Tatjana Maria wins second WTA title of the season

Tatjana Maria secured her second title of the season at the Barranchilla Open in Colombia. The Porsche Team Germany player won the WTA 125 tournament by beating Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro 6:1, 6:2 in the final. In April, the 2022 Wimbledon semi-finalist was already successful at the tournament in Bogota.
