It was the unexpected surprise of Monday April 4th. Coca-Cola unannounced announced a new limited flavor described by the brand as “pixel-perfect” – dubbed Coca-Cola Zero Byte. Beyond the question of what the famous pixels may taste like, you should know that the initiative is quite serious – it is in no way a late April 1st.
The brand is actually taking a first step into the metaverse with this drink. Coca-Cola reveals in passing that the first can of Coca-Cola Zero Byte has been hiding for some time on a new island in the open world of the game Fortnite. This strange taste, which will be available in limited quantities via the American Coca-Cola site from May 2, 2022, is the latest idea from Coke Creations, the firm’s R&D center.
Coca-Cola Byte: how does the new “pixel flavor” taste?
We already owe this division another surprising taste – “stardust” (… or “Stardust” in the original version). The strategy director at Coca-Cola explains to our colleagues from Cnet: “what I find particularly exciting regarding this ‘Coke Creation’ is the intentional, mysterious nature of the very definition of taste that pixels are meant to have. We know that all new Coca-Cola creations will provoke debate and curiosity.”
The brand’s press release states that this drink “delivers the flavor of pixels in a drink that transcends both the digital and physical worlds”. Apparently Coca-Cola’s latest daring creation – the famous “Stardust” version was simply a kind of normal Coca-Cola with a more pronounced ginger taste.
As you’d expect, there’s no predefined convention around what pixels should taste like. Unless you give this drink the unsavory flavor of plastic, liquid crystals/organic compounds and indium oxide – which dominate, you can imagine the real bouquet that a downloading pixel must normally leave on the tongue.

Unfortunately, it will probably not be possible to obtain cans in France. As we told you, the drink will only be sold on the American site of Coca-Cola, with limited deliveries in the United States. The firm speaks of ultra-limited quantities available on a “first come, first served” basis.
