Coastal Wind Advisory: Senamhi Reports Increase in Wind Speeds in Lima, Callao, and Other Regions

The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi) reported that five regions of the coast, including Lima and Callao, among those that will withstand the increase in wind speed up to 33 kilometers per hour, from Sunday the 14th to Tuesday, January 16.

According to the entity attached to the Ministry of the Environment (Minam), it is expected that this increase in moderate intensity winds could generate the rise of dust/sand and a reduction in horizontal visibility, mainly in Ica.

Additionally, cloud cover and fog/haze are expected towards sunset and early morning.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, January 14, winds with speeds exceeding 33 km/h are expected on the coast.

The regions affected by these winds are: Lima, Callao, Ica, Áncash and Arequipa.

What are these winds due to?

Senamhi specialists. They explained that this phenomenon is due to the approach of the South Pacific Anticyclone (APS) off the Peruvian coast, which generates an increase in winds coming from the south.

The National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) recommended that local and regional government authorities carry out:

  • Technical safety inspections in buildings, relevant and necessary, within the framework of their powers, to ensure the correct design of infrastructures, in order to guarantee the safety of the population, especially in the districts near the coast.
  • He suggested securing roofs and stringers to walls, reinforcing window glass, as well as staying away from electrical equipment, sharp materials and structures affected by wind. It is also suggested to moor all types of river boats.
  • Indeci advised the use of warm and waterproof clothing, drinking hot drinks and, if you have a respiratory or allergic infection, go to the nearest health center.
