Coastal Getaway: Tourists Flock to Belgium’s Scenic Coastline for Summer Vacation

2023-08-15 11:23:00

July having been gloomy, tourists flocked to the coast at the first signs of good weather. They were thus a million, according to Westtoer’s estimates, to stay at least one night on the Coast, a number similar to that of last year at the same period. The night from Saturday to Sunday was the most successful, draining 275,000 reservations for a peak occupancy of hotel establishments located at 95%.

Weather: “We will probably have a fairly large thermal anomaly this weekend”

The average occupancy rate was 90%.

Foreign tourists who come to fill their lungs with sea air represent 30% of hotel reservations, the Belgian coast being especially appreciated this long weekend by the Dutch, Germans, French and Luxembourgers. Walloons and Brussels residents account for 26% of overnight stays.

Vacation rentals and campsites have also benefited from favorable weather conditions, adds Westtoer, as have second home owners.

One-day tourists, numbering 480,000, were nevertheless rarer than last year (-25% compared to the same period last year). If the blue sky was able to convince, it indeed lacked a few degrees to reach the conditions of August 15, 2022, a little warmer.
