Coal Mine Fire in Kazakhstan: 16 Workers Dead, Company Blamed – Latest News and Updates

At least 16 workers have died in a fire in a coal mine in the Central Asian Republic of Kazakhstan. Another 31 miners were missing following the accident in the industrial city of Karaganda, the operating company ArcelorMittal announced today, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Already in August there was a fatal accident in a mine owned by the international steel company, in which five workers died. A government-appointed commission blamed the company for the accident.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered his government to end its investment partnership with ArcelorMittal following the recent incident. He expressed his condolences to the victims’ families.

In November 2021, there was also a serious accident in a coal mine not far from Karaganda, which also belongs to ArcelorMittal. At that time, several workers died in a methane gas explosion. There had already been several fatal accidents in the mine in the town of Abai.
