Coal leads to record rail freight transport | Economy

Freight trains transported a record amount of freight last year. This is mainly because 28.6 percent more coal was transported.

This is evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands.

Last year there was less gas available in Western Europe and the gas that was available was very expensive. Power plants have used more coal as a substitute. They often enter our country via the port of Rotterdam. From there they often go by train to power stations in the Netherlands and abroad, especially Germany.

A total of 44.5 million tonnes of freight was transported on Dutch rail last year, a record. It represented a growth of 4.3 percent compared to a year earlier.

In addition to coal, container transport also grew considerably last year. Transport to Germany and Italy in particular increased.
