A recent boost from the government, the CO2 tax credit will be awarded to many workers and retirees in 2024.

The March 2023 tripartite gave birth to several aids for workers and retirees. Including the reduction in tax thanks to the economic tax credit and the adaptation of the tax scale. Another less mentioned aid is in preparation: the CO2 tax credit. From January 1, 2024, this one will come”offset the cost of the CO2 tax for the lowest salaries” then justified the government.

According to the law, the CO2 tax credit will be €12 per month for all those whose income does not exceed €40,000 per year. That is €144 per year for employees, retirees and self-employed.

Proof that this “CI-CO2” is designed for low wages, its effect is decreasing.

According to the calculations of the Chamber of Commerce, which studied the law implementing it, an employee receiving €60,000 gross per year, i.e. €5,000 per month, will be entitled to €6 per month of CO2 credit. And it is not granted beyond a gross salary of €79,999 per year.

Intended to enhance purchasing power, the CO2 tax credit will however be limited by the reduction in the amount of the employee tax credit at the start of 2024 (-8€ per month for an employee at the qualified minimum social wage). And by the increase in the CO2 tax on January 1: it will increase from €30 to €35 per tonne of carbon.

The text of the law, which also includes the economic tax credit, has just been advanced in the Chamber of Deputies. His vote is expected before the summer, which will soon allow a reduction in your taxes.
