CO2 pricing will rise to 45 euros per ton in 2024

CO2 pricing, which was introduced as part of the eco-social tax reform in 2022, will increase next year. The plan was to increase the tax from 30 euros annually when it was introduced (35 euros in 2023, 45 euros in 2024 and 55 euros in 2025). However, the first increase was lower at 32.5 euros due to inflation. As planned, emission certificates will now become more expensive next year; a ton of CO2 will then cost 45 euros, the Ministry of Finance announced.

This means that the issue value for national emission certificates is the same as in Germany, for example, the Ministry of Finance emphasized. SPÖ leader Andreas Babler recently called for the increase to be suspended, and a corresponding motion for a resolution was rejected in the National Council on Thursday. In addition to the Social Democrats, only the Freedom Party agreed to this. Criticism of the planned increase has also come from within the company’s own ranks in recent months. The Lower Austrian governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) spoke out several times once morest the regular increase in the CO2 tax set by the ÖVP and the Greens.

To compensate for CO2 pricing, the climate bonus will be available once more in 2024. The amount depends on CO2 pricing and will be determined during the first half of 2024. The bonus itself will be paid out to around 8.5 million people from autumn 2024. In 2023 it was 110, 150, 185 or 220 euros, depending on where you live.
