Co-founder of rock bands King Crimson and Foreigner Ian McDonald died

Rock musician and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald has died in New York at the age of 76. informs The Guardian.

McDonald died on February 9 at his home surrounded by his family, a spokesman for the musician told the publication. His son, as he writes Rolling Stoneclarified that the cause of death was cancer.

McDonald was born in 1946 in Osterley, in the British county of Middlesex. As a teenager, he began to play the guitar, then, while serving in the army, he learned to play the clarinet, flute, saxophone and studied musical notation.

The musician is known as the founder of the progressive rock genre and co-founder of the bands King Crimson and Foreigner. Together with King Crimson, he worked briefly – in 1969 – 1970 – and released their debut and most famous album, In the Court of the Crimson King.

Macdonald founded the Foreigner group in 1976. The musician took part in the recording of three albums of the group, which became multi-platinum in terms of sales. In 1980 MacDonald left Foreigner.
