Co-creator of Workflow, precursor to the Shortcuts app, leaves Apple

The co-founder of DeskConnect (developer of the former Workflow app) Ari Weinstein announced in a post on Mastodon who left the Apple following six years at the company — added to another three at the company he founded. Apple acquired Workflow in 2017, when the developer joined the Cupertino giant as a software engineering manager.

In case you don’t remember, the current app Shortcuts (Shortcuts) originated precisely with Workflow. The operation of both is quite similar, with the objective of creating automations, in order to perform one or more actions in series with just one command. With the acquisition, Apple made the old app free, incorporating it, in iOS 12, to the system with the Shortcuts app.

I left Apple this month following six years (nine including Workflow!). When we made the Workflow app in a Hackathon, I never dreamed that it would be pre-installed on all iPhones and that it would be the basis for systems like Shortcuts and App Intents. I am so grateful for this journey and for our team. I’ve loved Apple and its products since I was a kid and to be able to work there alongside so many talented people has been a real honor and a lot of fun. So, it’s really hard to leave, but I’m excited to take some time off to rest and build something new!

As remembered the 9to5Mac, to be able to implement the automations, Workflow had to work around some Apple restrictions on third-party apps. With the incorporation of the app to iOS from the Shortcuts app, however, these limitations were removed, so that the beloved automations became even more powerful and advanced. Even following the acquisition, the old app also continued to be updated before being incorporated into the system.

Even with the departure of Weinstein — who still took care of what resulted from its creation — the Shortcuts app should continue to be improved, as there are already even communities dedicated to the creation and maintenance of its resources, in addition to libraries, like the MacStories. Here, we also have some automation tips that can make your life easier.
