“Corporate profits went through the roof last year. At the same time, many employees cannot afford their groceries. The spoils must therefore be better distributed,” said chairman Piet Fortuin when announcing CNV’s commitment to the new collective labor agreement season. He predicts that these “employee shares” can yield a bonus of around a thousand euros per year.

Since 2022, daily life has rapidly become more expensive and unions have sometimes negotiated very significant wage increases in collective labor agreements. This was regularly preceded by strikes, such as among municipal officials, regional transport or Albert Heijn distribution employees.

The CNV will impose different requirements on companies that have already significantly increased wages in the past year than on companies that still have to catch up with inflation, the union reports. Last collective labor agreement season, the union aimed for a wage increase of between 5 and 10 percent, but in certain cases wages increased by as much as 14 percent.

In upcoming collective labor agreements, CNV also wants to work on shorter working weeks, which should ensure a better balance between work and private life. As far as the union is concerned, employees should work 30 hours per week as standard. According to CNV, this is the first time that the union has also made these demands during collective labor agreement consultations. “Working one hour less is actually 2.5 percent wage room.” Parental leave and bereavement leave should also be fully paid.
