The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela reported this Wednesday night that the day to collect signatures to activate a referendum to revoke Nicolás Maduro from the position of president passed normally this Wednesday.

The day was marked by controversy, since the electoral body raised conditions last Friday -12 hours to obtain the support of 20% of the census- that the organizers considered “a buffoonery” and classified as “unfeasible”.

Due to this, the promoters chose not to call Venezuelans to the signature collection day, despite which, some citizens have attended.

The CNE avoided referring to the controversy that arose, but detailed that, “in compliance with the schedule,” they will conduct an audit between February 7 and 10 to determine how many citizens signed.

“Once all the activities subsequent to the day for the collection of expressions of will (collection of signatures) have been completed, the CNE must issue the declaration of origin or inadmissibility of the recall referendum,” added the electoral entity.

Finally, they recalled that, in the event that they have not achieved the support of 20% of the electoral census, a requirement that is also necessary in each of the regions, the process will be “terminated” and cannot be repeated during the rest of the mandate of Mature.
