Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus of the same family as chickenpox, genital herpes and cold sores. It infects humans and is usually transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids (saliva, blood, breast milk, urine, tears, semen, vaginal secretions).
What is the mode of transmission?
CMV is very common in the population, but most people infected have no symptoms. Infections evolve without seasonal influence worldwide. Seroprevalence varies from 40 to 100% worldwide. Maximum when socio-economic conditions are precarious, it is lower in developed countries.
Le virus, sensible heat, quickly loses its infectivity in the external environment
During primary infection, the virus is excreted in saliva, respiratory secretions, urine, tears, cervico-vaginal secretions, semen and breast milk. “Le virus, sensible heat, quickly loses its infectivity in the external environment” add Leïla Belkhir. Transmission therefore requires close or intimate contact.
