Social audio platform Clubhouse announced that users can now send text messages to friends who hear those texts in the sender’s custom voice.
The platform launched group voice chats for the first time in order to stay connected amid user disruption.
Members can send each other asynchronous audio messages, which appear in a format similar to Instagram Stories.
Clubhouse acknowledges that you may not be in a position to send voice messages to friends, so you can train your own voice and send text messages so your friends hear the message in the recreated voice.
The platform displays an indicator to your friends when the AI voice reads the message. The platform pointed in Blog This feature still maintains the feeling of chatting in real time with a friend.
Clubhouse said: “Imagine that you are sending a text message to a friend, and the other party hears your words as if you were actually saying them. Only you can use your own voice, and friends can always tell if you’re actually speaking or using your own voice feature. The Your Own Voice feature makes speaking, writing, or reading and listening seamless, so you’ll never lose that feeling of engaging in a live conversation.”
Clubhouse claims that its artificial intelligence technology is able to recreate your voice close to your original voice, even when you train it by reading only a few phrases.
The platform explained that artificial intelligence cannot recreate your laugh correctly. The platform can create audio on its own if you’re not comfortable recording your voice.
The platform did not specify any additional details, although it is possible that it uses an artificial intelligence model to convert text into speech, and the new feature called “Private Voice” is currently available in the United States.
The use of the platform has diminished in the past few years, although in its last funding round it raised $4 billion.
In the past few years, it has witnessed several layoffs, although last year it claimed that it had a few years before giving up.
Clubhouse is now experimenting with artificial intelligence-powered features to facilitate conversations between friends, and hopes to re-engage users.
Separately, last year Apple released a feature that creates a voice similar to yours called Personal Voice, which is useful for people at risk of losing their ability to speak voice-wise due to conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
