Clubhouse gets redesign with Audio Chats à la Instagram Stories

O Clubhouse won this week a redesign from the feature launch Chatswhich consists of a new way of communicating through the social network, using audio messages. In addition to the app’s well-known public rooms, the novelty is a way to talk to friends more privately, even in a group and asynchronously.

The function’s interface resembles the Stories do Instagram — comparison made by Clubhouse itself —, with icons for each of the group members shown almost as if it were a “virtual bar table”. The idea is that you record, send and listen to all the audio messages received, going through the Chats, with the possibility of listening to the audios at 2x speed, but without the need to gather them all at the same time.

From now on, when opening the Clubhouse app, Chats will be highlighted. When creating a new Chat, it is possible to define whether only friends or also friends of friends can participate. The idea, however, is to be a feature used by people who share ties — certainly a different proposal than how the app was initially conceived.

Although the idea is that you hear the voice of your friends, the content of voice messages is also transcribed so that you can read what was said. The focus, however, is precisely on bringing people together, with an idea of valuing friends to the detriment of focusing on followers and content reach.

It is worth remembering that the functionality does not replace traditional chat rooms. They, as well as the Clubhouse as a whole, however, have been facing a large decrease in the number of active users compared to the height of the social network, amid the pandemic. The new feature, therefore, is an attempt to resurrect the network, although it is difficult for Chats to bring the company back to its previous level of popularity.

In addition to the new feature, the company has announced a few other changes. in other areas and more generally in the app. Among them, there is no longer a dedicated tab for your rooms, which are now on your profile, while events now appear in the activity feed. Some features were also abandoned, such as automatic messages in rooms.
