Club Brugge’s Victory in Ghent: Belgian Cup Quarter-Final Recap

2024-01-16 21:46:00

Club Brugge qualified for the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup by winning in Ghent (0-1). Igor Thiago made the difference in the first half.

Main victim of the CAN and the Asian Cup, Ghent presented themselves without Jordan Torunarigha, Tsuyoshi Watanabe, Hyun-Seok Hong, Nurio Fortuna and Tarik Tissoudali when it came time to challenge Club Brugge in the quarter-final of the Belgian Cup.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Buffalos lost their goalkeeper Davy Roef to injury following 10 minutes. Paul Nardi being out until the end of the season, he is the new recruit Daniel Schmidt (ex-Saint-Trond) who made his debut at the Ghelamco Arena.

Unsurprisingly, all these changes had an impact on Ghent’s performance. Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s men looked for a long time and left the Club a lot of space, especially on the right flank. Andreas Skov Olsen took the opportunity to serve Igor Thiago in the small rectangle for the only goal of the match in the 17th minute.

The Bruges residents then managed their meeting without taking too many risks, even if Jorne Spieleers had to save his team on the goal line in added time. Ronny Deila’s men will face the winner of tomorrow’s Brussels derby between Union Saint-Gilloise and Anderlecht.
