The news was greeted with difficulty by the 123 foreign workers hired by Olymel in Vallée-Jonction.

The company had recruited several employees abroad to make up for the labor shortage in the region.

Louis Hans Jonathan Bérard, originally from Mauritius, had been recruited by Olymel. He left relatives, relatives and friends to work in the factory specializing in the processing of pork.

Despite the sad news, he does not intend to leave Beauce to work in another Olymel plant.

“Personally no, I do not plan to move from here or even return to Mauritius. Because I already left everything there to come here […] the situation is a bit difficult,” he explained in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.

His work permit only allows him to work for Olymel.

The closure of the plant will have major repercussions on the economy of the municipality located in Chaudière-Appalaches.

Nearly 1,000 people will lose their jobs by the end of the year, Olymel said Friday in Saint-Hyacinthe.
