Closure of Historic Retailer Intermarché in Auxerre Sparks Concern for Employees and Community

A historic retailer in Auxerre, Intermarché is living its last weeks in Saint-Siméon. The supermarket – which had undergone exterior renovation and upgrading work in 2012 – will close its doors definitively on the eve of the start of the school year, on August 31, 2023. After forty years of presence in the Hauts- d’Auxerre, where the supermarket – then under the Saveco brand – had opened in 1974, the first housing units in the ZAC had barely been delivered.

This upcoming closure was confirmed to us by an employee of the store as well as traders from the shopping center, gathered this Thursday, June 29 around representatives of the management of Intermarché, whom we might not reach.

The city center of Auxerre will host a garage sale like no other on Saturday

An employee reports: “We were told the store was closing on Friday June 23 and we received our dismissal notice letter at the beginning of the week. We are around forty employees, many temporary workers for some time, but also elders there for a very long time. I have always heard of closures since I have worked here and I have seen the activity gradually deteriorate in recent years.

Even if it hung in our face, it’s hard. When they announced the closure last Friday, we were left with our mouths open…

Met this Thursday, she assures that “we will not let ourselves be done in terms of compensation”.

“Without recovery by the end of the year, we will all die”

Could the supermarket be taken over by another brand? Impossible to say for the time being… “Last year, Mr. Duhamel (at the head of SA Noryon which manages the Intermarché d’Auxerre, editor’s note) had told us that he hoped to find a buyer. But today, unless we don’t know some things, it should close. Part of the gallery would even be walled up…”, testifies the employee.

Courtepaille bought by La Boucherie, 1,500 employees made redundant

“Someone from the management told us that a sign might be interested in taking over the store, but we don’t know who, or when there will be work. Or even if it will be done… But without recovery by the end of the year, we will all die. My wife and I still have two and a half years of credit to repay and I would like us to buy back our business”, confides Jérôme Boujat, the manager of the CBR bar-restaurant located in the gallery, which took over the business six years ago.

“I have lived in the neighborhood since 1974 and I come here regularly to do my shopping. I have a car so if it closes, I will go elsewhere; it won’t be a big problem for me but it’s really a shame.. .”, confides Michel, crossed at the entrance of the shopping center.
