Nyambe: Military junta in Niger closes country’s airspace. The military junta’s move was to reject an ultimatum by the Association of West African Nations to restore power to ousted President Mohamed Basoom. The announcement by the Sena leaders was a rally of supporters of the military rule at the stadium in the capital Nayamba.

Military regime spokesman General Amadou Abdurrahmane said the airspace was being closed due to the possibility of military action led by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The airspace is closed until further notice. The spokesman alleged that forces had been pre-deployed in two Central African countries to intervene in Niger. However, he did not specify which countries.

ECOWAS has given Niger until Sunday to reinstate the ousted president. ECOWAS has not yet commented on the next steps. ECOWAS imposed economic and travel sanctions on Niger following the military coup.

At the same time, American media reported that immediate military intervention on Niger was unlikely. The media reported citing a top military commander of one of the member states that ECOWAS needs more time to prepare for military action.
