500 government-owned liquor shops in Tamil Nadu will be closed tomorrow. The government had earlier decided to close 500 of the 5,329 retail liquor shops across the state. The move marks the beginning of the government’s policy of closing down liquor shops in a phased manner. The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation has informed that 500 selected outlets will not function from tomorrow.

Minister V Senthil Balaji, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate and hospitalized for heart disease, made the announcement in the House. He had told the state assembly on April 12 that out of 5,329 liquor retail outlets across the state, 500 outlets would be closed. The government order in this regard was released on April 20.

Earlier, the opposition Pattali Makkal Party (PMK) welcomed the move and demanded Chief Minister Stalin to implement liquor ban in the state.
