Closing Ceremony with “flying” Tom Cruise, Air and Phoenix, expectations for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish and Beyoncé

Paris Olympics organizers want to create a ‘wave of joy’ to close the event in style in Paris on Sunday (11/8).

Two weeks after the first Opening Ceremony in the history of the Games outside a stadium, expectations are high for the Closing Ceremony at the Stade de France, which hosted athletics events.

Artistic director Thomas Joli told reporters today (9/8) that his desire is to make it a real celebration.

Shorter than the Opening Ceremony, which started at 20:30 and ended after 00:30, the Closing Ceremony will start at around 22:30 with the athletes’ “return” ceremony to the stadium, followed by a 40-minute show which was “directed” by Thomas Joli with music mainly by Air and Phoenix.

Then there will be speeches and a handover in Los Angeles, the city that will host the next Summer Games in 2028, with “an anthem that connects France and the United States,” the artistic director of the Olympics told the French news agency (AFP). Ceremonies. It will conclude with an “exciting finale” around 00:30.

Another highlight will be the extinguishing of the Flame on the Olympic altar.

At the heart of this performance, an operatic piece called ‘Records’ mixes past and futuristic imagery.

“I am happy to return to the stadium and find certain advantages, a place where we can work on the decor, a place that is more reminiscent of theater and opera,” said Thomas Joli.

“We wanted to reach high, into space, and our story is the story of an interstellar traveler who arrives at the stadium and discovers the remains of the Olympic Games. He will revive them, like Pierre de Coubertin who, at the end of the 19th century, wanted to revive the ancient Olympic Games”, explains screenwriter Damier Gabriac.

That character, the “Golden Traveller,” all in gold and light-colored clothing by young Swiss designer Kevin Germaniere, will be performed by French breakdancer Arthur Cardet.

More than a hundred performers, acrobats, dancers, circus performers will transform the stadium into a giant performance hall with a huge stage.

Part of the show will take place in the air, with many passages “without a safety net at a significant height,” said choreographer Kevin Vires.

The costumes, entirely recycled by Kevin Germaniere (apart from the stars dressed by sponsor Dior), will be in the palette of gold, black and rhinestones.

Responsible for the musical accompaniment of the performance will be the symphonic orchestra Divertimento, with the children of the master school of Fontainebleau.

And after that the presence of Los Angeles. According to American media, the star of “Mission: Impossible” (dangerous mission) Tom Cruise could perform a stunt for the audience at the Stade de France and ensure the passage of the Olympic flag between Paris and the United States, with videos that they have been filmed on both sides of the Atlantic.

The names of rapper Snoop Dogg, a consultant for the American channel NBC, as well as the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers and singer Billie Eilish were also mentioned.

Some still dream of a performance by Beyoncé, a staunch supporter of Team USA on her own social media.

The Opening Ceremony is more the imagination of a country that we present. That of the Closing is a reminder of the values of Olympism in general sharing, universality but also the fragility of the world”, said the director of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies Thierry Reboul told AFP.
