Climber dies en route to Grossglockner in Tyrol

A 48-year-old climber died on Monday afternoon on his way to the Stüdlhütte in the Grossglockner mountain in Karls, East Tyrol. The man fell forward below the Lucknerhütte, which is about 2,130 meters above sea level. Police said he fell about 15 meters down a steep embankment and became motionless. Resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. The exact cause of death was initially unclear. A forensic autopsy has been ordered.

Subsequent hikers provided first aid until an emergency helicopter arrived. However, the Austrian died on the spot.

The senior executive revealed that the accident victim had previously asked two friends accompanying him to wait for him. When they turned around, they saw that he was leaning forward and falling. The three mountaineers started their climbing trip from Lucknerhaus in Karls.
