Asunción, IP Agency.- The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), Carlos Giménez, detailed the situation of the tomato harvest nationwide, which was seriously affected by the weather conditions of the first months of the year. Out of 1,00,000 kilos that were expected, there will be around 80,000 kilos.
“The production level is low for this time and for what we had planned,” he reported at a press conference. He pointed out that the weather conditions, with the heat waves in January and February, and an atypical autumn hit family farming very hard.
“85% to 90% (of the crops) were affected and of the 1,00,000 to 800,000 kilos that we had (in previous harvests) we are going to have 80,000,” the minister pointed out.
Despite the technical assistance of the MAG, the high heat and lack of rain affected the yield of the crops, which currently affects the demand for tomatoes in the domestic market. He added that the weather conditions affected the entire region and especially family farming.
Technology adoption
An alternative to alleviate the effects of climate is the widespread adoption of technology. However, the investment is very high, so the minister suggested that these types of projects be financed through the Agricultural Habilitation Credit (CAH), the Development Bank, or assistance organizations.
However, the sales prices of greenhouse production are lower than the average sales costs of open-air production (Gs. 2,500 per kilo compared to Gs. 5,500 per kilo).
