Good news ahead of COP 28 on climate in Dubai: plants are capable of absorbing more human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) than expected. It is this optimistic conclusion that has just been revealed by an international survey led by Western Sydney University, published in the American scientific journal Science Advances .
By plants, we must understand vegetation, that is to say all the plants that grow in a given place. To analyze this phenomenon, Matthias Cuntz, research director at the National Institute of Agronomic Research (Inrae) and contributor to the survey, explains to “Echos” that the researchers have designed a new model. Parameters often excluded by other studies but which also influence the ability of plants to “fix” carbon (photosynthesis) have been integrated.
