“A climate-friendly healthcare system is possible,” Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) is convinced. Many innovative projects would show “how a healthcare facility can make a key contribution to climate neutrality”. Climate-friendly hospitals, senior citizens’ and care facilities, primary care units, pharmacies and medical practices are now to be awarded a Best Practice Award “Climate-friendly health care facilities”.
The federal government, in particular the health and climate ministries, have set themselves the goal of making the health system climate-neutral and thus more crisis-proof, Rauch recalled on Thursday. After all, around seven percent of the domestic CO2 footprint is caused by the healthcare system, which is why pioneers in climate protection are also in demand in this area. They want to bring this to the front of the curtain with the Best Practice Award organized by Minister of Health Rauch, the Climate Competence Center and Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG). The submission period for this begins today, Thursday, and ends on September 8th. The award will be given in autumn. The award-winning projects are presented to the public and awarded prize money of 1,500 euros each.
“In this way we create awareness and motivate other institutions to participate. We want to learn from these role models and thus build up a pool of knowledge,” said the Minister of Health to the APA. This knowledge that is not only important for climate protection and climate change adaptation strengthens health, increases security of supply and the population’s trust in the facilities and also saves costs by reducing CO2 emissions.
The call for tenders is primarily aimed at those healthcare facilities that have already taken part in the “Advice on climate-friendly healthcare facilities” project. Submissions are possible in five categories – namely in the areas of buildings, energy production and supply, mobility, nutrition, resource and waste management and sustainable procurement as well as communication and awareness-raising. The three best projects in each case will be awarded. A commission of experts from the fields of climate and health has been set up to evaluate and select the projects to be awarded prizes.
