Climate Crisis Hits Hard: Greek Wine Production Falls by as Much as 80%

“This is the third year in a row that we have seen a large drop in production. From Macedonia and below, the reduction ranges to 50%, while in some areas it even reaches 80%. Last year we lost more than 1/3 of the production due to downy mildew, as it affected both flowering and fruiting, while this year the prolonged heat of July and the lack of rainfall brings a new blow to production”, he says to “ET”. the director of the Central Cooperative Union of Vine Products (KEOSOE), Paraskevas Kordopatis.

It is noted that the volume of wine production decreased last year to 137,943 liters and is the lowest of all time, presenting a drop of 35.1% in relation to 2022-2023, which was formed at 212,680 liters, while at a five-year level the decrease touched 40.2%. “A normal production amounts to 200,000 liters. If this year we manage to get 130,000 liters of wine, it will be a miracle. However, the harvest continues and we will see how the production will be shaped in the end”, underlines Mr. Kordopatis.

However, according to him, the lack of water has “annihilated” 10% of the plant capital, while the yields of the vineyards in Attica have fallen from 400-500 kg per hectare to 150-200 kg.

The picture is similar in Crete, which under normal conditions produces 10,000-12,000 tons of wine grapes. As he notes in “ET” the president of the Organization of Grape Growers and Olive Growers of Crete, Priamos Hieronymakis, the reduction in production amounts to 80%. “The harvest is over and the wineries don’t even cover the bottoms of their barrels. The yield of the vineyards is normally 2.5 tons per hectare and this year it hardly reaches 400-500 kg. The heat, combined with the lack of water, dealt the final blow to the vineyards,” he says characteristically.

As a result of reduced production the price has risen to close to €1 per kilo from €0.80-0.85 last year and €0.60-0.65 in 2022, with wine industry representatives pointing out that they cannot absorb in total price increases.

“The producer price has increased by 20%-30%. It is the third year in a row that due to the decrease in production, prices have increased. Part of the price increases will also be passed on to consumers. I estimate that on the shelf the prices of wines will increase from 5% to 10%”, he points out to “ET”. the president of Skouras Estate, Giorgos Skouras.

Thus, a mid-range wine (750 ml bottle) is sold from 8-11 euros, while until last year its price ranged from 7-10 euros and in 2022 from 6-9 euros. With the new data, the price of the bottle may not reach 9-12 euros. According to winemakers, if they increase their prices by more than 10%, there is a risk that consumption will decrease and the percentage of citizens who will switch to bulk, which according to unofficial data represents 60% of domestic consumption, will increase.

However, representatives of the sector emphasize that there will also be price increases in bulk wine, underlining that the cheaper the product, the greater the pressure for winemakers, as the profit margin is very small.
