New Delhi: In 2022, 1600 people lost their lives in various weather disasters in India. This is indicated in the annual report of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

According to the WMO, 900 deaths were reported from lightning and 700 from floods and landslides. Globally, 95 million people have been forced to flee due to climate change. Statistics also indicate that more people will lose their homes as climate change worsens.

A heat wave in India and Pakistan during the pre-monsoon season of 2022 adversely affected foodgrain yields. Wheat exports from India were halted due to reduced yield. According to the report, this has exacerbated the global food shortage crisis.

Rising levels of temperature-increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere may create economic and social inequality. The report also warns that these will cause global food crisis, floods, heat waves and droughts.

Heavy rains in Pakistan last year killed 1,700 people and displaced eight million people. It indicates that 33 million people have been adversely affected by the heavy rains in Pakistan and economic losses of $30 billion have been caused.

A heat wave in Europe in 2022 killed 15,000 people in Spain, Germany, UK, France and Portugal. According to the figures, last year was the record heat in Europe between 2015-2022.

Melting glaciers and rising sea levels will reach record levels in 2022. It is also said to cause climate change and environmental impact.

The snowpack on the Tibetan Plateau is expanding. A large gap between the movement of migratory birds and the availability of food disrupts the ecosystem. The report mentions that the changing flowering time of trees and plants is exacerbating the crisis.
