Farmers organizations allege that efforts are being made to exclude dairy farmers in the name of climate change project. The organizations also point out that the government is not preparing to implement a clear exit scheme even when it is regarding to reduce the number of cattle. The government is causing confusion.
ICMSA President Pat McCormack alleged that dairy farmers are being completely ignored. Various schemes that were supposed to be implemented in the dairy sector are still gathering dust in government departments. The government is not announcing any new schemes for dairy farmers.
The department states that if the climate target is to be achieved, 65,000 dairy cows will have to be reduced within three years. This will cost €200 million. Last month, Minister Charlie McConlogh initiated discussions on this, but there was strong opposition from dairy processors once morest the exclusion of cattle.
The country’s leading milk processor Tirlan has sought feedback from its members on its farmers’ retirement scheme, asking them to articulate various reasons for exiting the dairy sector. The organization wanted to clarify how much the number of cows can be reduced and how the land will be used if cattle are avoided.
